Applying the right amount of fragrance

Applying the right amount of cologne could be tricky if you really like the scent. But you, being a responsible cologne wearer, want to know the best method for applying cologne for different situations.

When applying cologne there are some things that you need to consider:

Indoors:   Do not spray directly on the skin. Walk into the mist or spray directly above you.

Outdoors:   If it is windy or there is going to be a lot of movement, spray once directly onto the skin. The fresh air will dilute the scent but it will still warm up with your body when you need it.

Closeness:   If you are going to be sitting shoulder to shoulder with people for a long while, the best advice is to not use cologne at all. You can use an aftershave or body wash which will have less fragrant oils.
Spray in the air in front of you and walk into the mist.
Spray above your head so the mist falls on the top of your head, which can get stinky.

Tips about your fragrance:

Do not dilute your cologne so that you can spray it directly to your skin. Doing this will change the balance of your cologne and make the fragrance spoil quickly over time.

A fragrance is not designed to last all day. You will probably need to update it every three to four hours, depending on the chemical changes in your body daily, that reflect on your skin, as well as the kind of concentration of the fragrance:

Perfume (Parfum): up to 6 hours
Parfum De Toilette (PDT): Up to 5 hours
Eau de parfum (EDP): 3 to 5 hours
Eau de Toilette (EDT): 2 to 4 hours
Eau de Cologne (EDC): up to 2 hours
For Men Eau de Toilette (EDT): Up to 5 hours
Aftershave / after-shave lotion: 2 to 3 hours
Eau Fraîche: 2 to 3 hours

Can a perfume be aphrodisiac?

One of the most ubiquitous questions consumers have in mind when deciding on a fragrance is:

Can a perfume be an aphrodisiac?
Is there such a thing as a “love potion”?

Since the beginning of human history scent has proved the ability to kindle passion and eroticism. Think Cleopatra ascending the Nile on her barge of incense designed to announce her arrival...and seduce Mark Antony.

Scent can certainly make you feel sexier but there is no scientific evidence to suggest that fragrance is actually an aphrodisiac. Smell is obviously linked to our sexuality and some experts believe that hormones released from glands in the groin and armpit act as powerful sexual attractants in the way that pheromones released by animals do. The sense of confidence the right perfume can give, plus the attractive chemical cocktail it helps create, can certainly be a great turn-on.

After all, two people cannot maintain a relationship if the don't like each others’ smell.

LAVENDER - A Journey of Magic & Smell

Among all essential oils, lavender is the most versatile, with a range of properties from analgesic, through antidepressant, antiseptic, bactericidal and decongestant, to the hypotensive, insect repellent and sedative.

The main properties of the lavender can be summarized in a soothing and regulatory. Perhaps the most important is its ability to restore states of imbalance – on the mind and body.

How to find a perfume that is right for you!

Finding a perfume that is just right for you can feel like an overwhelming task. Given the thousands of fragrances on the market, it may seem easier just to stick with what you've always known.

Overall, yes, it can be overwhelming to find the right fragrance. The perfume you wear is a personal choice; it's not like the clothes you borrow from your best friend. The fragrance your best friend wears might not work with your particular body chemistry.

Besides, fragrance is a very personal choice. People will remember you for it. They will compliment you on it. They will ask what you're wearing. You'll wear it on first dates or for your wedding.

If you arm yourself with proper knowledge, then shopping for the right fragrance won't be such a daunting task.
Let's get started:

Fragrances are categorized according to notes, accords or other characteristics that define their overall similarities. More often than not, we tend to lean toward a particular fragrance family -- whether we know it or not.

FRAGRANCE FAMILIES

Fresh:  Fragrances categorized as fresh often include "green" notes, like fresh-cut grass, the smell of spring in the air, light citruses and airy notes. If you have an outdoorsy personality, a fragrance with fresh notes might be best for you.

Floral:  Probably the most popular of all fragrance categories, floral scents encompass a wide range of blooms, from a single rose petal to a medley of floral bouquets. Floral scents may include notes of jasmine, carnation, gardenia, orange blossom, rose, lily of the valley, tuberose ... you name it. Floral scents can be powdery or sweet, depending on their combinations. If you enjoy the scent of a particular flower, maybe you should try fragrances that include notes of that flower.

Oriental:  Just like its name suggests, the Oriental fragrance group is comprised of notes that are rich, bold and overall exotic. Notes like amber and vanilla are oftentimes present in the oriental group. Oriental fragrances lean toward the "heavier" side and are more sensual fragrances, ideal for nighttime wear or romantic occasions.

Woods (or Chypre):   This fragrance group consists of your aromatic wood and moss notes -- sandalwood, cedarwood, oak. Patchouli is sometimes present, as is vetiver and pine. Many masculine fragrances fall into this category, given the richness of woody scents.

FRAGRANCE PERSONALITY

Outdoorsy or sporty:   If you live by a who-needs-makeup philosophy and your idea of weekend fun is camping in the great outdoors, you may prefer a fresh, citrus fragrance. Citrus fragrances are invigorating and light, unlike orientals which tend to command a room. Your personality type doesn't want the fragrance to stand out, rather complement your personality. You may lean toward unisex and green, herbacious fragrances as well.

Elegant:   Maybe your weekends are lined up with black-tie dinner parties, and fragrance is much more than an afterthought. Oriental fragrances may be the best option for you. Rich and oppulent, these fragrances stand out and linger for hours. You may prefer a floral oriental (orange flower, vanilla) or a woody oriental (sandalwood, patchouli and spice).

Girl-Next-Door:   You have that certain Jennifer Aniston appeal; a little shy, a little sexy, but overall the girl he (or she) takes home to Mom. Fresh, clean scents are ideal as are woody floral. The latter might seem slightly more masculine, but woody notes can really bring out a shy girl's sex appeal.

All-American Guy:   You're athletic, handsome and playful. Your fragrance must be able to stand up to the challenge, but not overwhelm the room. Fresh, water scents are great options, as are light woods.

Sophisticated and Modern Man: You keep up with the latest clothing trends and prefer your fitted trousers to Euro-shoes to jeans anyday. A touch of classic goes a long way. Fresh, crisp fragrances are perfect for you. Throw in some sweet florals and you've got a winner.

Can a fragrance change my mood?

Yes. One of the most remarkable properties of fragrance is the way it instantly affects our emotions. Studies have shown that fragrances can stimulate or calm us, encourage a good mood or bad, shape positive or negative memories and induce sweet dreams. Aromatherapy - the art of healing with fragrant essential oils - is based on the idea that aroma has the power to affect mood.

Fragrance has long been recognized as a powerful and subtle tool for re-balancing the mind and the body. “Every perfume is a medicine” says the old Chinese proverb.

Ann Gottlieb, a fragrance consultant who has worked on the development of Calvin Klein’s fragrances, said in a recent interview that “Much of what’s used in products that make aroma therapeutic claims is based on tradition and folklore rather than science but, more and more, research is pointing to our ability to alter moods. Soon, fragrance is not just going to make you smell good, it will have a very real physiological effect."

In a recent study, peppermint and lily of the valley were found to increase alertness at work. One Tokyo company pipes peppermint into the office to improve productivity. Another company sends different fragrances through the air conditioning system to enhance staff productivity. A whiff of citrus helps get the day off to a good start. An unobtrusive floral fragrance aids concentration in mid-morning and afternoon. A touch of cedar seems to relieve tiredness during the lunch break and in the late afternoon.
